How to care for your Knives, Kettle, Utensils & Toaster

Knives

Here are some simple tips to keep your knives in great condition:

  • Always wash knives separately and do not put them in the washing bowl with other cutlery or crockery, to prevent injury
  • Before first use and after each use, holding the handle carefully handwash each knife separately in hot soapy water, rinse and dry immediately.
  • Do not allow knives to soak for long periods of time and carefully dry knives thoroughly with a clean, soft tea towel before storing them
  • Do not use steel wool or harsh abrasives to clean knives.
  • Do not immerse knife blocks or sheaths in water.

Knife Blocks, Sheathes & Storage

Always store knives in a knife block or sheath to protect the cutting edge and prevent personal injury.

When placing knives in the knife block, care should be taken with the blade as this could damage the block and blunt your knives.

To clean your block, use a cloth rinsed in warm water and mild dishwashing detergent to wipe the exterior of the knife block or sheath, then dry with a clean, soft towel.  Please do not use steel wool, coarse scouring pads or harsh abrasives to clean knife blocks or sheaths.

My knives are blunt, what should I do?

A sharp knife is a safe knife. A dull knife requires excessive pressure when cutting which increases the likelihood of injury.

To sharpen, clean your knives thoroughly and use a honing steel or the final stage of a two or three stage sharpener either before or after each use of the knife to hone the blade and maintain the edge. It is also a good idea to have your knives professionally sharpened every 12 months.

Stovetop Kettles

Is my stovetop kettle induction suitable?

Only kettles with a magnetic base are suitable for use on induction cooktops To check induction suitability place a magnet on the base, if the magnet adheres, the kettle is suitable for use on induction cooktops.

Keeping your kettle clean

We recommend that you empty the kettle after each use, dry the inside with a clean cloth and wipe the exterior on a regular basis.

If you are in an area with “hard water”, mineral deposits may form on the inside of the kettle. To help treat this:

  • Fill the kettle with equal amounts of water and white vinegar.
  • Bring to the boil,
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Pour out the water/vinegar solution and rinse well.

You may also wish to try a proprietary descaler following the manufacturer's guidelines. The use of descalers containing phosphoric acid, sulphamic acid or their equivalents must not be used as they may cause damage.

To clean the exterior of the kettle, use a non-abrasive mesh pad or damp cloth rinsed in soapy warm water.  Please do not use steel wool, coarse scouring pads, harsh abrasives or oven cleaner to clean the kettle as these may damage the surface. Stubborn stains may be removed with a soft nylon brush.

Electric Kettles

Before First Use

Carefully unpack your kettle making sure you keep all the packing material until all the parts of the product have been found and the product has been used. We recommend keeping all the packing material in a safe place in case at any time you wish to repack the product for shipping purposes.

To remove any dust that may have accumulated during packing, simply wipe the exterior of the product with a clean, soft, slightly dampened (not wet) cloth, and thoroughly dry. Do not use any abrasive cleaners as they may scratch the surface.

Power Cords

Please do not immerse the product, its flexible cord or the plug in water or any other liquid. Never carry or hang the product by the power cord. Lightly coil the power cord - never wrap the power cord around the product.

Care & Cleaning

Be sure the kettle has been allowed to cool, is turned off and DISCONNECTED from the power supply before cleaning.

To clean the exterior of the product (both kettle and cordless base), wipe around the outside with a slightly dampened, but not wet, soft cloth. Remove stubborn spots by using a moistened (not wet) cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid the use of scouring pads, harsh detergents, solvents, polish, abrasive or aerosol cleaners as they may damage surfaces of the product. Dry with a clean, soft cloth before storage or reconnecting to the Power Supply.

If you are in an area with “hard water”, mineral deposits may form on the inside of the kettle. To help treat this:

  • Half fill the Kettle with normal cold tap water.
  • Add 30ml of white vinegar to the water in the Kettle
  • Boil the mixture
  • Allow to stand for 1 to 2 minutes, then
  • Re-boil the mixture.
  • Allow to stand for a further 1 to 2 minutes
  • Re-boil once more.
  • Empty the vinegar mixture and thoroughly rinse several times before normal use.

The use of descalers containing phosphoric acid, sulphamic acid or their equivalents must not be used as they may damage your Kettle.

Cleaning the Filter

It is recommended that your filter (the filter screen is fitted across the inside of the spout of the kettle) is regularly cleaned. To do this:

  • Raise the Lid and remove the Filter by lifting the moulded filter from its housing.
  • Wash the Filter in warm soapy water.
  • Rinse and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
  • Insert the Filter back into the housing in the kettle.

We recommend the Product not be used unless the Filter is in place.

Toasters

Before First Use

Carefully unpack your toaster making sure you keep all the packing material until all the parts of the Product have been found and the product has been used.

Be sure the toaster has been allowed to cool, is turned off and DISCONNECTED from the power supply before cleaning and storage.

Clean the crumb tray after each use to prevent the crumbs causing a fire hazard. To open, slide the crumb tray out of the base, the opposite end to the controls, and wipe away crumbs with a dampened cloth, thoroughly dry and refit the crumb tray.

Important: To avoid heat damage to the bench top, the toaster must not be operated when the Crumb Tray is removed.

To clean the exterior of the product, wipe around the outside with a slightly dampened, but not wet, soft cloth.

Do not clean with metal scouring pads as pieces can break off the pads and touch electrical parts, creating a safety shock hazard.
